How should we judge a government?

In Malaysia, if you don't watch television or read newspapers, you are uninformed; but if you do, you are misinformed!

"If you're not careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed, and loving the people who are doing the oppressing." - Malcolm X

Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience - Mark Twain

Why we should be against censorship in a court of law: Publicity is the very soul of justice … it keeps the judge himself, while trying, under trial. - Jeremy Bentham

"Our government is like a baby's alimentary canal, with a happy appetite at one end and no
responsibility at the other. " - Ronald Reagan

A true professional MP

I sympathised with YB Fong Po Kuan when I watched the clip on tv last night of her exchange with the Speaker of the House of Parliament.

If she had a ‘tidak apa’ attitude, she could easily tell her constituents that she had tried her best and that, as expected, she wasn’t given a chance. So many BN MPs got by without saying a word. But she tried a few times to get the Speaker's attention without success, because of her commitment to voice out what her constituents had wanted her to.

The Speaker had said before that he was just doing his job, but anyone watching the proceedings at any time would have formed an opinion that he is wont to using his Section 44(2) ?, in sending her out of the House, just like what he did in suspending YB Karpal Singh for 2 days.

Like most things in Malaysia, you are denied opportunity in the usual channels, but when you insisted, you are made out to be irresponsible and too demanding. Just like how our pompous self-righteous Home Minister would say, ‘I’m just following the law’ while closing one eye and shutting the other, when his own party leaders break it.

There must be something wrong in our parliamentary system when MPs, especially those in the opposition, are continually complaining about ‘not given a chance to speak’ or the Speaker’s excuse of ‘not enough time’. Yet, we are put on a circus show of name-calling and shouting which even school children have got the impression that that was the purpose of MPs in the august house.

Put simply, there must have been so many topics which the public wanted to be voiced out in Parliament but just did not see the light of day. It does not help with a partisan Speaker who is seen favouring his political masters.
