Legality aside, most people questioned why our Sultan agreed to the hasty swearing-in ceremony when there are serious issues which are yet to be settled in the courtroom.
A compromise under the circumstances could have been accepting the status quo while waiting for the legality of the three resignations to be tested. This would prevent the expensive fresh elections for the whole state of Perak while proving which coalition is more popular.
At the last General Elections, in the state of Perak, PR garnered 442,660 votes and BN 399,565 votes (based on popular votes). That was 43,095 more votes than BN. On what basis does BN have the right to rule perak?
Results of the last General Elections showed Hee Yit Foong stood in Jelapang and obtained 12,219 votes under DAP; Kapt Mohd Osman stood in Changkat Jering and obtained 9,411 votes; while Jamaluddin Mohd Radzi stood in Behrang and obtained 6,771 votes, both under PKR. The total votes obtained by the three self-claimed Independents were 28,401.
Even hypothetically, assuming all the votes remain theirs to be counted, this is still short of the 43,095 which Pakatan has over BN. But in actual fact, the voting pattern is likely to be very different because most voters voted for the political party rather than the candidates and after this episode, whoever stand under BN are likely to lose big. This must be the main reason why BN leaders are avoiding by-elections for these three seats under dispute. Furthermore, the court hearing on February 10 involving the corruption cases of Osman and Jamaluddin could have been unfavourable despite the perception otherwise because of the change in political affiliation.
As for the super frog, we could not help laughing when a friend related to us what he watched on our national television. A local university professor said something to the effect that Nasaruddin, the assemblyman for Bota, was the bravest because he crossed over to PKR and after ten days, realised that it was not effective enough, decided to cross back to Umno! The professor was described as the most stupid he has ever come across for having made such a ludicrous statement.
In my book, Nasaruddin is the most despicable for having no principles and appeared fickle minded. But in actual fact, he was probably used by Najib to topple Tajol Rosli so that Najib could take over as state party chief and make use of his power and bags of goodies to topple the state government. At the same time, the blame could be pushed to Anwar for having started the party hopping… brilliant but bad, for politics and for the nation. This would in effect, add another notch of notoriety to Najib’s political career.
Pak Lah initially condemned Nasaruddin when he first defected to PKR but was silent when he returned to Umno. On the dispute over the legitimacy of the Perak state government, he advised the people to accept the reality that BN has taken over the state. I just wonder whether he would say the same if Anwar were to have enough Members of Parliament to take over the country!
