How should we judge a government?

In Malaysia, if you don't watch television or read newspapers, you are uninformed; but if you do, you are misinformed!

"If you're not careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed, and loving the people who are doing the oppressing." - Malcolm X

Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience - Mark Twain

Why we should be against censorship in a court of law: Publicity is the very soul of justice … it keeps the judge himself, while trying, under trial. - Jeremy Bentham

"Our government is like a baby's alimentary canal, with a happy appetite at one end and no
responsibility at the other. " - Ronald Reagan

This could happen to any of us...

'CCTV footage shows Saiful at condo' according to a Malaysiakini headline. 'So what?' immediately comes to my mind.

Just imagine how many of us could have been seen by people and/or recorded on CCTVs which are fairly common these days. If at a certain point in time, a lone lady happened to be in a particular office or at her apartment when I or anybody else was videotaped to have gone in. In future, someone who has something against me could use the footage against me, with accusations of molest or even rape.

What used to be 'a lone man with a lone woman' ('ku lam kua luei' in Cantonese) which could raise suspicions of an affair, was followed by what used to have been common of an old man (sugar daddy) and his young mistress.

Since then, the permutations increased with all sorts of combinations. We came across news reports of several cases of mature female teachers having affair with their young students. Recently in Northern Ireland, a woman in her late fifties and a young man (late teens) was having an affair.

With gay sex in vogue, we cannot use the excuse 'I'm with John' or a wife telling her husband, 'I'm with Susan' and feel safe that the spouse would not feel suspicious or threatened.

Now, in Malaysia, a young man was seen going into a condominium where an opposition leader in his sixties happened to be in. Alleged sodomy took place which is now being tried in court.

Can you see the danger which all of us could be in now? Especially opposition leaders who pose threats to the incumbents in our political system?
