How should we judge a government?

In Malaysia, if you don't watch television or read newspapers, you are uninformed; but if you do, you are misinformed!

"If you're not careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed, and loving the people who are doing the oppressing." - Malcolm X

Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience - Mark Twain

Why we should be against censorship in a court of law: Publicity is the very soul of justice … it keeps the judge himself, while trying, under trial. - Jeremy Bentham

"Our government is like a baby's alimentary canal, with a happy appetite at one end and no
responsibility at the other. " - Ronald Reagan

Much ado about an apology

Our national leaders seem to make a big deal out of Anwar's apology to the Jews in USA. That both sides of the political divide tried to outdo each other as to who is more anti-Semitic, anti-Jews or anti-Zionists must have puzzled ordinary folks like myself, who cannot tell much of a difference as to the different descriptions. I wonder how many of our people know, and for those who do, whether they care about it. What seems obvious was this religious divide and the long standing problems in the Middle East which Muslims in Malaysia would treat anything to do with Jews or Israelis as enemies. Yet, there are so many things which are invented by Jews which we have found to be useful and taken for granted. There is no way we can completely cut ourselves off from all things Jewish.

I, for one, am confused over or PM's or our previous PMs' clamour for US support in certain things and at the same time, would treat Anwar's US supporters as something else. Basically, I find there is too much 'guilty by association' type of generalization. Last night, Najib was on national television criticizing Anwar's so-called apology to the Jews in the US, when Anwar had earlier tried to explain what he had mentioned could have been misconstrued. Both actions would have shown that the Jews in the US are really powerful, enough to cause possible backlash in our Malaysian politics.

Perhaps this picture from ARTiculations helps explain why people can get pretty confused:
