How should we judge a government?

In Malaysia, if you don't watch television or read newspapers, you are uninformed; but if you do, you are misinformed!

"If you're not careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed, and loving the people who are doing the oppressing." - Malcolm X

Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience - Mark Twain

Why we should be against censorship in a court of law: Publicity is the very soul of justice … it keeps the judge himself, while trying, under trial. - Jeremy Bentham

"Our government is like a baby's alimentary canal, with a happy appetite at one end and no
responsibility at the other. " - Ronald Reagan

Survey No.5: If you have a wish, do you wish your only daughter be like...

40% chose YB Nurul Izzah (PKR MP for Lembah Pantai), eldest daughter of YB Anwar Ibrahim, the present Opposition leader (and a former Deputy Prime Minister) who suffered under Tun Dr. Mahathir; he was jailed 6 years for a relatively minor offence, suffered humiliation over a widely perceived trumped-up charge of committing sodomy; now under Najib's premiership, being charged for a similar offence, which trial seems like our national pastime and viewed as a more serious crime than even murder!

36% opted for 'none of the above' which again, was due to the lack of choices available more than anything else.

9% opted for YB Teresa Kok (DAP MP for Seputeh), a veteran in politics known for her principles and fighting spirit against all kinds of attack by political enemies.

A similar 9% chose Y Bhg Datuk Nicole David, our World Champion in Squash which made her name synonymous with the game locally.

Surprisingly, only 4% for Y Bhg Datuk Michelle Yeoh, our former Miss Malaysia, but best known as an international film star, especially in a James Bond film; and none for Y Bhg Datuk Siti Nurhaliza, our best known singer! But can you imagine if this survey was done by a site with predominantly Malay visitors? I am sure her many fans would have voted her to top position.

This little survey means nothing more than an exercise in using the 'poll' feature in Blogger. It would have been more representative if done by a widely known online news portal like Malaysiakini. My visitors are small in number and those who took part were even less! Furthermore, this site being pro-opposition, the visitors are likely to be too, which explains the bias in voting involving local politicians.
So far, I have used only local personalities, of whom foreign visitors are unlikely to know, even less likely to take part!

Thanks to those who took the trouble to take part and gave me something to write on.
