How should we judge a government?

In Malaysia, if you don't watch television or read newspapers, you are uninformed; but if you do, you are misinformed!

"If you're not careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed, and loving the people who are doing the oppressing." - Malcolm X

Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience - Mark Twain

Why we should be against censorship in a court of law: Publicity is the very soul of justice … it keeps the judge himself, while trying, under trial. - Jeremy Bentham

"Our government is like a baby's alimentary canal, with a happy appetite at one end and no
responsibility at the other. " - Ronald Reagan

Enforcement of parking rules felt in Batu Gajah Perdana

As a frequent visitor for breakfast in this housing estate called Batu Gajah Perdana (along the Ipoh-Lumut highway), I find the parking spaces provided on the side of the road away from the shops rather than in front, unfriendly to motorists. It is obvious as daylight, especially in the morning, that motorists would prefer to park their cars in the shade rather than under the direct sunlight. But the planners did not foresee this, so the recent enforcement of parking rules caught many, who were used to the previous lackadaisical attitude of the enforcers, by surprise. The fines range from Rm100 to Rm300! What an expensive breakfast for the unlucky ones! A couple (both retired teachers), got a ticket from a traffic policeman when the wife got out of the car to buy packet lunch and instead of waiting in the car, the husband got down as well, thinking it would take only a few minutes! I can vouch that he used to park properly when we had our breakfast together. But he was plain unlucky during the few minutes.

I do not condone those who simply park their cars, especially to be as near as possible to the shop they patronize, but I would suggest to the local authority to redraw the parking lots in front of the shops instead of across the road. The present parking lots are not only disliked by motorists because of the hot sun, but when it rains, it is further away from the shops too. With increasing traffic volume, crossing the road can be hazardous too. It is so simple to make this possible and ensure more people happy.
