How should we judge a government?

In Malaysia, if you don't watch television or read newspapers, you are uninformed; but if you do, you are misinformed!

"If you're not careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed, and loving the people who are doing the oppressing." - Malcolm X

Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience - Mark Twain

Why we should be against censorship in a court of law: Publicity is the very soul of justice … it keeps the judge himself, while trying, under trial. - Jeremy Bentham

"Our government is like a baby's alimentary canal, with a happy appetite at one end and no
responsibility at the other. " - Ronald Reagan

If you're not going to speak up, how is the world supposed to know you exist? “Orang boleh pandai setinggi langit, tapi selama ia tidak menulis, ia akan hilang di dalam masyarakat dan dari sejarah.” - Ananta Prameodya Toer (Your intellect may soar to the sky but if you do not write, you will be lost from society and to history.)

The opposite of Kiasuism: Ubuntu!

In our modern preoccupation in one-upmanship, we often forget the simple joys of life, like the joy of sharing.

With keen competition while studying, or while working to get promotions, or when in business trying to get a contract, it is always everyone for himself. The ugliest side of human nature will be manifested in the competition. Even in sports, the spirit of sportsmanship is often hard to find. In education too, what good is education when not in fairness and through selfishness or even cheating?

Politicians as our leaders, should set good examples for us to emulate. But instead, what we are seeing are greed and self-enrichment, at the expense of the nation and the people.

Every political leader in power seems to be in the race to own the grandest palatial mansion, the most luxurious car or even jet plane, or hold the most wasteful biggest dinner. How they are able to enjoy when fellow humans are trying to make ends meet, with children drooling over simple meals which their parents cannot afford, is hard to understand.

When we look around, those who were dictators of nations would have accumulated incredible wealth by the time they are too old or sickly. If given the choice, I am sure they would be willing to forego them for good health. How much better it would have been, had there been fairness in distribution of wealth which would have enabled more people to live better lives. Wouldn't that make more people happy? Even those who were entrusted with the powers?
